Founded as Phuket International Academy in 2009 and approved to become the 16th UWC worldwide starting August 2016, UWC Thailand is a warm, caring learning community that offers an all round education with social emotional learning and mindfulness at its core.
Student profile: Currently 400 students from 65 nationalities, aged 18 months – 18 years
Campus and facilities: The campus is situated in northern Phuket and nestled at the foothills of a national park. UWCT is next door to the Thanyapura Health and Lifestyle Centre, and due to a not-for-profit affiliation with the organisation, UWCT’s community has access to world class sporting facilities.
The school has a designated Early Childhood Centre, Lower and Upper Primary buildings, a Secondary School section and a Performing Arts centre.
Currently, UWCT has one Boarding House that can accommodate around 65 students. Plans are underway to build a second Boarding House and second Secondary building to accommodate anticipated growth.
Specialisms: UWC Thailand is founded on the fundamental principle of providing a caring, supportive and joyful environment for all members of the community so that they can grow as individuals. Even before being approved as UWC Thailand, the school was known internationally for its progressive approach with embedding social emotional learning and mindfulness into the curriculum.
The School offers a holistic educational programme that encompasses academics, social emotional learning and mindfulness, service, outdoor education and activities. As a 3-programme IB school, UWCT offers the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programmes.
Beyond the classroom: UWC Thailand is committed to making learning engaging and meaningful for all through experiential learning. It actively promotes outdoor education by providing authentic opportunities for the community to bond together as they engage in interdisciplinary experiences and interacting with the world around them.
With an extensive range of service learning activities taking place off campus, and the vibrant and varied culture of Phuket, learning is certainly not confined to the classroom. Students embark on many excursions and field trips throughout the year, and Grade 5 spends one day each week out in the community putting their learning into practice.
Students in Grades 2-12 also take part in annual WWWOCLs (Week Without Walls Off Campus Learning) with their fellow classmates. These are camps that focus on adventurous training, encouraging students to push the boundaries of their experience. Phuket is situated close to countless islands, parks and barely-touched landscapes, which provide fantastic learning environments.
