UWC Red Cross Nordic

Location:
Flekke, Norway

Set next to a Norwegian fjord, UWC Red Cross Nordic gives students insight into traditions of Nordic countries and the work of the Red Cross.

Student profile: 200 students aged 16 to 19

Founded: 1995

Campus and facilities: The campus is spread across the shores of the Flekke fjord in the mountainous west of Norway. As well as a dining area with a spectacular view overlooking the fjord, facilities include:

  • well-equipped laboratories
  • a music room
  • art and ceramics studios
  • computer facilities
  • a media centre
  • a waterfront recreation centre.
  • an aquatic centre
  • visitor centre which can host 100 people
  • a pool
  • a fully-equipped fitness training facility and gym.

Specialisms: The college works closely with the nearby Red Cross Haugland Rehabilitation Centre which provides opportunities for learning about first aid, lifesaving and humanitarian action.

Beyond the classroom: Traditions of Nordic countries and the Red Cross are reflected in the college’s emphasis on humanitarian and environmental concerns.

Students have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, a wide variety of people through the college’s service and activity programme. Through these, they can gain leadership, communication and conflict management skills.

All students work with the Leirskule, a residential school for Norwegian children held on campus every week in the spring and autumn terms. This school  is run by staff but students lead and instruct activities.

All non-Scandinavian speakers follow a Norwegian language course and an innovative Nordic studies programme. This gives students a better appreciation of the host region and local community.

The student council is a space where students can have their say on daily life at the college. Staff and students also elect members to represent them on the board, the governing body of UWC Red Cross Nordic.

Being woken early in the morning by a Swiss, brushing your teeth standing next to a Dane, hurrying to class in the morning rush hour with an Uzbek, sitting next to an Angolan in class, being taught Economics by a Chinese, going to a Ghanaian to clear confusions in maths, going for a run with a Brazilian; all these are little things that make this place beautiful. The international bonds we make here are things you don't get in any other school. This place is special.
