The only state-supported UWC school, Netherlands-based UWC Maastricht has students from over 90 countries and territories.
Student profile: 850 students aged 2 to 18
Campus and facilities: UWC Maastricht’s custom built campus, just outside the city centre of Maastricht, opened in September 2013.
Each school age groups has their own classrooms and facilities, while accommodation for boarding students is integrated into the campus, bringing it into the heart of school life.
The college’s impact on the environment is reduced by a geothermal heating system, and ventilation, heating and lighting is monitored by an internal sensor which only turns on in classrooms when people are present. Rainwater is stockpiled on campus roofs and transported to the surrounding lake.
Specialisms: UWC Maastricht acts as a role model for other Dutch schools by setting an example of how community service can become part of an education system.
Beyond the classroom: A belief in friendship lies at the heart of this UWC school. This is based around the idea that close ties forged between students of diverse nations in their developmental years will last a lifetime. It will provide the framework upon which peace and a sustainable future may be built.
Through volunteering in their local community students develop their courage and capacity to test their limits – to try, fail and try again – in a safe environment.
