UWC Adriatic

Duino, Italy

Founded in 1982 as the fifth UWC college and the first outside an English speaking country, UWC Adriatic has a spectacular location in north-eastern Italy.

Student profile: 200 students aged 16-19

Founded: 1982

Campus and facilities: College buildings and residences are spread throughout the Italian/Slovene village of Duino.  Through the college social service programme, students are encouraged to get involved with the local village community.

Teaching facilities include the:

  • Bartolomeo Migone Library
  • Rita Levi Montalcini Science Laboratories
  • Erich Hartmann Arts Centre
  • Principe Raimondo Auditorium
  • Gaspare Pacia Ceramics Centre
  • Mountbatten Academic Centre

The college also houses the International Chamber Music Academy Duino, founded in 1989 by the Italian classical chamber ensemble Trio di Trieste and now run by the Trio di Parma group.

Specialisms: Students with a very strong background in classical music are invited to audition for the college’s distinguished music teachers during the first weeks of term. If  successful, they can participate fully in the college’s music scholar programme.

Beyond the classroom: The local area offers remarkable opportunities to explore – culturally, linguistically and physically. Trieste is 20km away and, each year, the college organises visits to Venice, Padova, Bologna, Mantova, Verona and Ravenna.

Physical activities make use of the location between the Adriatic Sea and the Alpi Carniche and Alpi Giulie mountains. They include sailing, kayaking, rock climbing, skiing (cross country and downhill) and orienteering.

One of the most popular courses is world arts and cultures. Issues of identity are explored through the lens of past cultures including: Tokugawa Japan, Benin Africa, the Pacific Northwest, Avant-Garde Europe and Renaissance Italy.

The college’s comprehensive social service programme includes work with: immigrants, older people, children, disabled people, and local schools. A founding partner of Mondo 2000, a voluntary work association, the college organises activities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students also stage multicultural presentations and shows in the region, acting as cultural ambassadors.
